Students from The Ohio State University Medical School rotate on the Neurosurgery Service at University, Children’s and Riverside Hospitals. Students rotate for one month. Generally, they rotate during their fourth year but third year medical students rotate as well. The students make rounds with the residents in the morning and the students take in-hospital call every fourth night with the resident. If experienced, they may act as sub-interns. There may be up to four medical students on the service at one time. The Neurosurgery residents are expected to teach the students the Neurological examination, diagnosis and management of Neurosurgical emergencies and the principles of head and spine injury management. The students attend Clinic with the faculty and the Tuesday afternoon outpatient clinic with the residents. Once experienced, the student sees patients independently and presents the patient to the faculty present. The students are encouraged to attend surgery on the cases they work up, and are expected to attend all conferences. Each student is assigned a topic at the beginning of the rotation and gives a 15-minute presentation to the faculty, residents, and other student during the last week of the rotation.
